Whispering Willow Ranch - home of the grullo stallion, Nitros Revenue, Wendy and Charles Sallas breed high quality mares to produce excellent grullo and other color foals. Honest in their dealings, friendly and helpful, with a true passion for horses. Great people to talk to if you are seriously interested in buying quality stock for breeding or showing.
Horsebreakers, Inc. - Run by Jon and Marywade Gilbert, this Arizona facility offers three sales a year - Colors of the Spring and Colors of the Fall, plus my personal "gotta-go" - the August Buckskin Extravaganza, featuring buckskin and dun factor horses - GUARANTEED sound! This is where we bought Wheeling Minnie and Donnas Hickory. Go a few days early and make an appointment to go up and really look over the horses. The riders there will take lots of time with prospective buyers, acquainting them with the merits of horse after horse. It really paid off for us. The Buckskin Extravaganza is the one sale you MUST go to if you are serious about horses of color. Online catalogs make advance shopping a breeze!
Buyers and Sellers Resources
Pegasus USA - Buyers - Gerta Ambrosch has been in the horse breeding business for 40 years. If you need help to find a world class performance (reining, cutting, working cowhorse) bred horse, Gerta is THE person to talk to. She has innumerable contacts i the US and abroad, flying exported horses to Europe once or twice yearly. She sometimes has stock of her own - performance and racing bred Quarter Horses to sell, and top quality mares (like an exquisite Rum Squall daughter) to lease for a breeding season. She is constantly on the lookout for great horses at good prices and comes up with bargains you won't believe in the high end market. Listen carefully to her advice - she is subtle but really knows the market and gives the best advice. 209 334-4570
Equine.com - A really cool place to look for a horse to buy or to sell one when the time comes. Searchable database works extremely well. Advertise your horse with a photo ad for only $14.95 for 6 MONTHS! Add a snapshot ad and get even more hits - $24.95 for 6 months. Wow - what a deal! I get more inquiries from dreamhorse.com, but more sales from this service.
Dreamhorse.com - now maybe it was just that I was offering a super deal for a quick offer on a really good horse, but once my photo ad hit on this service, I had five interested buyers in 24 hours. When it was just a text ad, no bites, so you definitely want to go for the photo ad (equivalent to the snapshot ad on equine.com) for $15 for a three month run. The search functions are not as handy for buying, but it's a good service nonetheless.
American Quarter Horse Association - See if that name you want to give your foal is taken, check out basics on any horse - age, sex, color - for free. And loads of printable forms you may need. But if you want to do pedigree research here, it will cost you. AQHA members get $10 a month free online use. That's plenty if you just want to - say - print out your horse's pedigree. But if you want to get into eight generation searches, get complete get of sire records, or their cool new enhanced performance records which include not only AQHA points but also "alliance" records - like cutting and reining earnings - you can end up spending a chunk of change. Well worth it if you are buying and promoting breeding stock, in my opinion. Breed Associations
American Buckskin Registry of America - This is a registry for buckskin and dun factor horses (dun, red dun, and grullo). Check out color eligibility requirements, download membership and registration applications here. Classified section was empty at last visit, perhaps due to overpricing.
International Buckskin Horse Association - Stating that it is the largest registry for Buckskin, Dun, Red Dun, and Grullo horses, the IBHA site offers color eligibility requirements, basic forms, and current national point standings and show schedules. A classified section had some ads at last visit. The website states that the IBHA "maintains permanent horse show records and pedigrees", but again, if you are looking to flesh out your horse's pedigree with his ancestors' IBHA show records, you can't get it online at this point. One can only hope....
Foundation Quarter Horse Registry - "The first and original Foundation Quarter Horse Registry" is this organization's up front statement. "Most individuals carrying 75% Foundation blood are eligible for registration.... No registered thoroughbred may be closer than the fourth generation." In addition to registration applications, you can download the entire FQHR rulebook from this site, which is a good point in their favor.
National Foundation Quarter Horse Association - From their web site "NFQHA is a full service horse breed association dedicated to preserving and promoting the Foundation Bred Quarter Horse." They are now in their sixth year of existence. Rules for registration are stricter than the FQHR.
American Shetland Pony Club - Registry information, forms, studbook (by subscription), promotional information, and show schedules for the Shetland and Miniature Horse fancier.

Fancier Farm - What a COOL place this is! Wandering free are disabled retired horses, a llama, and a one dog welcoming committee named Spencer (a Newfoundland Retriever). Joan Dilworth runs the place and she is an absolute trip to talk to. Kind yet firm with stallions and generous with her knowledge. Boarding for all types of horses including stallions, foaling mares, retirees and lay ups with exacting needs. Phantom training, semen collection and insemination. This is who I entrusted Dundee to learn his "dating manners". I must admit, though, the kid in me likes going by because it's as much fun as the zoo. And I LOVE the zoo! Site is dated but this place rocks! Northern California Resources
Piece of Pie Ranch Ranch - Jill and Jeff Harris breed, train, and show. They own a grullo Dundee son, Watch Fiddling Jack. He will be one to watch in the future as a breeding stallion for those on the West Coast who like our bloodlines.

Monthly open shows offer a wide scope of English and Western classes (on separate days), are well run and offer lots of nice prizes and high point awards. We have boarded here and taken lessons. Talk to Donette or Larry - super people!

Alan Goldhahn, D.V.M. - 209-369-5646 - Our vet. An equine reproduction specialist, he also gives a very thorough and complete prepurchase vet check. Dr. Goldhahn is reliable about returning calls, is easy to talk to, and is very good about teaching you as you work with him. He listens to and seriously considers your observations and concerns about your horse's behavior, relying on your knowledge of your own animal, not just on xray films. I feel very comfortable with him and feel that my questions are always taken seriously and answered completely and without condescention. Highly recommended.

Looking for a stallion? Search by your own set of parameters and find just what you are looking for. and guess what? It's FREE! Other Handy Resources
U.C. Davis Color Genetics Testing - Want to know if your horse is "homozygous for black"? The Red Factor test that tells you. But the terminology is somewhat misleading - it should be something like "homozygous for black points" (mane, tail, legs) - in other words - the horse can only produce black OR bay base coats and their variants (for black - grullo and smoky dilutes; for bays - dun and buckskin dilutes). A horse that is referred to as "homozygous for black" can produce these colors, plus grays and roans. What he or she can NOT produce is a red or chestnut base coat or the dilutes of a red base coat (red dun, palomino). This test tells you if a horse carries the recessive allele (gene) for red. If he does NOT carry it, your odds for colors like grullo improve. Also now able to test for the cremello gene. More about this on an informational section when time allows. For now - this page provides some answers and allows you to link to a printable form. Send in the filled out form, some mane hairs with roots in an envelope, and $50, and in about three weeks, you will get your results!
Foal Gestation Table - TOO COOL! Enter your mare's name and the last date of cover - PRESTO! - a calendar is generated showing you when the foal is due, the window of possible foaling dates, with information on when to expect udder development, pelvic changes, and much more. You can also click to get information on fetal development. So much easier than futzing around with your calendar!
Horsin' Around Transport - 800-234-4675 These folks have hauled horses for me from Washington, Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Every horse has arrived in perfect condition, physically and mentally. They keep you up to date on any schedule changes and call after your horse has arrived to check on your level of satisfaction. Highly recommended!
